Some Legends reward clever plays, but Volibear, Relentless Storm rewards big ones.

What his Legend does

Whenever you play a Mighty unit, which is a unit with 5 or more Might, Volibear’s Legend lets you channel an extra rune (Riot Games, n.d.-a). More runes means more resources on the following turns, so every big unit you play also speeds up your next one.

His champion cards

Volibear, Imposing is a wall, with Shield 3 and Tank, and he draws you a card whenever an opponent moves to a battlefield other than his. Volibear, Furious is the hammer, as Deflect 2 makes him expensive to target with spells and abilities, and when he attacks he deals 5 damage split among the enemy units at his battlefield (Riot Games, n.d.-a).

Why it matters

This is a ramp deck with teeth. The Legend accelerates you towards your biggest units, and Imposing punishes opponents for avoiding him by refilling your hand, while Furious is both hard to remove and capable of clearing a battlefield on his own. The plan is simple, which is to get big quickly and then stay big.

It’s a bit like a heavyweight who only gets stronger as the rounds go on.

In League of Legends

Volibear, the Relentless Storm

Fighter / Tank · Freljord

To those who still revere him, Volibear is the storm made manifest. Wild, destructive and stubbornly resolute, he existed long before mortals walked the Freljord’s tundra and fiercely protects the lands he and his demigod kin created. Despising civilization and the weakness it brought, he fights to return to the old ways, when the land was untamed (Riot Games, n.d.-b).

From the Rift to the table

A demigod should play like one, and Volibear does, as his Legend only cares about Mighty units, which are the biggest bodies in the game. His Imposing card also captures how he plays in League, where he charges into the fight and soaks up punishment that would flatten anyone else. His full story is on his official League of Legends champion page.

If you like Legends that wall up and punish, our Leona Spotlight has a very different take on being tough, and every Spotlight so far is on the Cards page. Next up is Teemo, who turns Hidden cards into repeatable ambushes.

It are what it are.
